I love vampire literature and movies, and there is quite a lot in that subgenre, but much of it is bad. And I love poetry. And i love literature and literary theory. But to be honest, I didn't expect much out of Paul Lake's novel. It calls itself a _literary_ vampire mystery, which is a bit pretentious (and Lake is known as a critic an poet, not a fiction writer). I thought anything that bills itself as a literary vampire story...well, let's just say I didn't expect much out of it. And pleasantly, I was surprised (though I shouldn't have been, Lake writes well-done and interesting essays, and he has a knack for the narrative poem, so I know he can tell a good story). It's a well written story with believable characters (half the fun is guessing who the characters are in real life--and believe me, you can recognize many of the poets within) and a well thought out plot. It even has a nice twisted surprise ending. The only gripe I have is that Lake spends too much time complaining about the state of contemporary poetry and how our poets are 'treated' (sometimes I got the impression that he only wrote the novel so he could complain about what all poets already know..and already comlain about). Other than that you get an interesting story that blends poetry, criticism, literary history, and vampires into a great novel (had one of the big publishing companies released this book instead of Story Line Press, more people might be familiar with the book, but unfortunately Story Line, great press that it is, has never had the money to set forth much of an advertising or publicity campaign).

My son loves this book. He can rub the kitty and then snuggle with me as kitten snuggles with her Mommy. Great for bedtime reading!

Includes tips on tracking, measurements and definition of terms, pictures of the tracks with excellent analysis of the tracks, fore and hind, walking and running; excellent description of the animal; also included are references to other similar species. Excellent paperback is small enought to carry around into the field. Highy recommended.

Engaging and thoughtful, a fascinating look at post-reformation England and the means by which a common discourse was used by different groups for different purposes. The authors provide reflections on much more in the 700+ pages; all are worth reading. Highly recommended for anyone interested in vital, often ignored, dynamics in the the birthing of the modern world.

Read this book after reading "Frozen in Time" (about the Franklin expedition lost in the arctic) and "Alive" (about a 1972 plane crash in the Andes), both terrible and true tales of people forced to fight death and starvation.

This book is as stunning as the other two!

The book is well researched. Dramatic. Brings to light details and hypothesis of how these people coped in the face of death.

It is interesting seeing this team piece together the Donner party's activities.

great book. I stayed at peters house this summer and come across the book i am not a book reader very much at all. it made me sad and happy,armour was one of the great men you could ever read about. give it a try and all of peters books

The mix of geography, social studies and environmental science is wonderful. The book starts the reader out in Maine and ends up down in Florida. It covers rocky coasts, sandy beaches, estuary, salt marshes and coral reefs. The material is age 9-12 age appropriate while using the appropriate vocab; such as organism, habitat, biological community etc. The information will prepare, (introduce), the student for 8th grade science. The bits of information are teasers to learn more. "Fewer oysters are able to filter less water. The bay [Chesapeake] once held enough oysters to filter its water in three to six days. The oysters that live in the bay today would take more than a year to do so." How do they do that? Read another book to find out.

The Atlas Of Oceans is a superbly presented guide to the world's oceans and covers how they work and where they are in the world, from currents and waves to different depths and attempts to explore the world's oceans. Geography and science classes will find The Atlas Of Oceans very useful for the elementary grade students with its many photos and an alluring narrative structure.
